Council hails action to raise profile of disabled sports8.25.56pm GMT Sun 23rd Mar 2008 • A WEEK of events aimed at boosting the profile of disabled sports locally has been praised by Richmond Council - with a call for local people to take part. Three sports clubs in the borough are staging free taster sessions during Disability Sport Awareness Week (26 March - 1 April), to promote and develop sport and physical activity for disabled people. Cllr John Coombs, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure, said: "The Council is committed to increasing sporting opportunities for all. This excellent programme of events will demonstrate the range of disability sports available in the borough and give people a superb opportunity to try them out free of charge. The borough has an excellent sporting reputation and the most active population in the country. We work closely with our partners in the private and voluntary sector to increase choice and promote healthy lifestyles. The Competitive Edge programme, for example, has massively increased the numbers of young people taking part in competitive sport. I urge people to come and enjoy the taster sessions."
