Plea for carers as Council launches adult placement scheme5.50.41pm GMT Fri 7th Dec 2007 A plea for carers has been issued by Richmond Council with the launch of a new scheme which aims to help adults with a learning disability live more independently. The Adult Placement Scheme provides fostering-style support enabling vulnerable adults to live in an ordinary domestic setting. Carers are paid by the Council to provide a home or short stay to people over 18 with a learning disability. They will share domestic tasks, teach life skills and encourage them to stay healthy and active. Potential candidates must go through an assessment process and police checks but people from any background can apply. They may live alone or with partners and children and it is not essential to have experience with people with a learning disability. Cllr Denise Carr, Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Housing, said: "The excellent scheme promises to make an enormous difference to the lives of some of our most vulnerable residents. We are committed to providing high quality, adult placements, so that people with a learning disability lead the lifestyles they want. The scheme will help them live in the community, enjoy greater independence and build friendships. If you think you can provide a home and support for an adult with a learning disability, we want to hear from you. The Council will provide training and payment for the duration of the placement."
