Operation Christmas Presence4.59.57pm GMT Fri 7th Dec 2007 A hard-hitting campaign to combat theft and anti-social behaviour over the festive season is being launched by the Richmond upon Thames Community Safety Partnership. 'Operation Christmas Presence' will attack Christmas crime on two fronts, urging residents to guard their homes against opportunist thieves, and reminding revellers to behave responsibly and keep a close eye on their belongings. Sir David Williams, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: "Crime levels typically increase over the Christmas period and last year saw a 30 per cent rise in burglaries during November and December. To prevent a repeat this year the Council and the police want residents to take the initiative and freeze out criminals. Following a few simple tips, such as storing presents out of sight or keeping valuables close to hand when out celebrating, can make a real difference. We want people to enjoy Christmas and New Year but we also want them and their property to be safe."
