Rugby stadium to host furniture swap shop6.35.38pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 13th Sep 2007
A furniture swap shop allowing residents to donate unwanted home and garden goods and pick up others absolutely free will take place at Twickenham Stadium this month. Heavily discounted compost bins will also be on sale for as little as £5 at the Richmond Council-run Give and Take Day on Saturday, 23 September. Local people are invited to give away unwanted furniture, appliances and other items from the home and garden, and take their pick from the free goods on display. You do not have to donate items to take others away. The free community event encourages people to reuse items which would otherwise be thrown away and sent to landfill. The last Give and Take Day in East Sheen in April attracted 500 people who found new homes for seven tonnes of furniture and household goods. Cllr Martin Elengorn, Cabinet Member for Environment on Richmond Council, said:??"Increasing the borough's recycling rate is one of our key priorities but we are also urging residents to reduce or reuse waste whenever possible. With ever increasing disposal costs for waste, it is vital we make every effort to reduce the amount we send to landfill. The Give and Take Day is a great opportunity to donate goods they no longer want and even pick up items free of charge."
