Council vows: "Clean up goes on"

12.23.03pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 15th Jun 2007

Although the special 100-day Capital Clean Up campaign across London ended this week, Richmond Council has vowed "It's only the start" and that there will be no let-up in its efforts to make the borough the cleanest and greenest in the capital.

Capital Clean Up is a multi-agency effort in which the Council and a host of other organisations joined in an intensive 100 day drive to smarten the borough. Hotspot areas for environmental eyesores such as flytipping, litter, graffiti and dog fouling were targeted. Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Martin Elengorn, said:

"The aim was to involve local people, businesses and other organisations in improving their local environment - and it achieved great success and a momentum which will continue for years to come. I am hugely encouraged by the way local people, including schoolchildren, responded to the clean-up call. It is a partnership effort which will continue long after this particular campaign has ended. Keeping the borough clean is something we all have a part to play in, whether it's picking up a discarded wrapper or reporting flytipping. And I can promise there will be no let-up in our efforts to make this borough the cleanest and greenest in London."
