The drive to secure jobs in the borough for people with learning disabilities is reaping success.

Increasing numbers are being employed by local companies thanks to the efforts of Power Employment, part of Richmond Council's adult social services team. For many years they have helped people with learning disabilities into paid employment with a variety of organisations. Among their number is Jimmy Demitriou, who this week celebrated becoming the first to be employed in The Rugby Store at Twickenham Stadium. Jimmy, 36, who lives in Whitton, works there part-time on general duties and on event days. He said: "This is a super job. I work with really nice people and there is always something interesting going on."

Richmond Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Housing, Cllr Denise Carr, said:

"People with learning disabilities have a tremendous amount to offer local employers and the efforts of Power Employment are really reaping rewards. It is a terrific success story, making a positive impact and a real difference to people's lives.
