Young artists rise to leader's challenge

12.38.04pm GMT Fri 9th Feb 2007

Five young artists will see their paintings go on display in York House after winning a competition set by the Leader of Richmond Council.

Cllr Serge Lourie invited youngsters from two of the borough's schools to create works inspired by renowned artists. The watercolours by Tehmina Hussain, Thea Lester and Joe Lagheney, Year 9 pupils at Hampton Community College, have been framed and hung next to the artworks from Pissarro and Sukonkin, in the Leader's York House office. Two winning students from St James's Primary School in Whitton, Orla Kavanagh, 7, and Katie Norman, 10, will also have their work displayed there.

Cllr Lourie said:

"These vibrant paintings all depict scenes from the borough and will be a marvellous addition to the Borough Art Collection. The curator of Orleans House Gallery, Mark de Novellis, helped me choose the winning entries, which will join work from painters including Samuel Scott, Peter Tillemans, and Stephen Wiltshire. I hope their success will provide a huge confidence boost for these talented young artists."
