Tree adopters wanted!7.53.58pm GMT Sat 27th Jan 2007 Richmond Council has issued a new plea for more tree "adopters" to come forward to help care for the hundreds of new street trees being planted. Nearly 600 residents have so far joined the Council's Adopt A Tree scheme - but more are needed. The scheme is geared to ensuring the community plays a full part in making the borough's trees look their best. Residents taking part receive advice and information on tree care and a window sticker to show their support for the scheme. They're invited to adopt newly-planted trees in their local street or park, and there are plenty to choose from as Richmond Council is planting 550 new street trees in the current winter planting season which ends in March. The emphasis is on native species to encourage local biodiversity. In areas where new trees are being planted, Adopt A Tree leaflets are popped through local letterboxes. Involvement in the scheme doesn't cost a penny, just a little of people's time. Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Martin Elengorn, said: "This scheme has really taken off and I applaud residents for their support. It's tremendous that nearly 600 people are taking time to look after new trees and help them become established. However, with many more trees now being planted, more adopters are needed. With our varied and extensive tree stock, we believe we're the greenest borough in London. The Council and residents are determined to keep it that way.
