Following the government's announcement that it proposes to ban smoking in public places like cafes and pubs - but only in pubs which serve food - MP Vincent Cable said that: "this is the kind of compromise that will satisfy no one. In particular it may discourage progressive pubs - which are trying to become more attractive to families and non-drinkers by providing meals."

"There is strong evidence that passive as well as active smoking is damaging to health and it is therefore entirely right that non-smokers, including staff, should be protected in public places. But respect should be shown for those who want to exercise choice over their lifestyles, even if it is damaging to their own health, and I would hope that pubs and clubs will have the right to maintain a 'smokers only' room if that is what their customers want".
