Gas Meter Confusion3.39.14pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 5th Oct 2004 Numerous local residents are alarmed and confused by the process by which gas meters are being replaced. British Gas is trying to replace all the domestic meters in the area. The work is being carried out by Transco. But the men who come to the door leave cards saying that they work for Siemens. A number of residents are contacting Vincent Cable's constituency office to complain about the confusion; they unable to get sensible answers from any of the companies about why the work is being done and who will pay for it; and not sure whether to trust the workmen. MP Vincent Cable said: "I have sent a message to British Gas asking them to explain more clearly what is going on. Some residents have received letters; others haven't. Some are quite alarmed. At my own home, the Siemens people appeared at the door after I stayed at home for them and then disappeared before I could answer it, leaving a card. The whole operation is confusing, amateurish and, someone - presumably the customer - will have to pay". Contact Vincent Cable or Mr Ellins 8892 4243
