Coe Must Now Help London Get Crossrail To Aid Olympic Bid

2.54.14pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 19th May 2004

Commenting on the news that Barbara Cassani is to step down as chairwoman of the London Olympics to be replaced by Sebastian Coe, Liberal Democrat London Mayoral candidate, Simon Hughes, said:- "Londoners and the UK should thank Barbara Cassani for her tireless work in driving the Olympic bid to the final selection. Sebastian Coe is a good choice, a convincing sporting and public figure, and will be a no-nonsense and wise bid leader.

"Seb Coe has some tough challenges ahead. He must help get the Government to deliver on its London transport duty to get the go-ahead for Crossrail and the East London Line extension. Without this, London's chances may end in failure.

"Seb Coe alongside the rest of London must persuade the world that London is a secure, successful and exciting host city capable of delivering a world class Olympic Games.

"Seb Coe and his team will have my 100% backing and support."
