MP visits Sudan

1.05.16pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 7th May 2004

Dr Jenny Tonge MP and husband Keith were in Khartoum last week with 'Afrimed ' - a charity set up by TV presenter and journalist Zeinab Badawi. They were looking at medical facilities and working for the safe delivery of a huge container full of medical equipment donated by business and NHS trusts throwing out redundant machines.

"It was so good to be able to see some decent supplies coming into the public hospital in Omdurman which serves very poor people and those displaced from war torn South Sudan.

"Now the peace process is well underway we are hoping to help the Sudanese rebuild their health service with volunteer doctors and nurses going to Sudan in their holidays. Many Sudanese doctors have been working in the UK recently and they want to go home in their free time and help Sudan. Our charity will help them do that."
