MP Demands Enquiry Into Rail Power Failure

11.11.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 6th May 2004

A major power failure on new ST Trains rolling stock, which left local commuters stranded for 4 hours on a train to Waterloo, and who were then left to climb out of a single exit on a wooden ladder.

Vincent Cable said: "The trains are unreliable enough without the hazard of sudden and prolonged breakdowns due to defects in new equipment".

"This episode was somehow kept out of the national news. But it must have been very alarming to the people involved. And there are major unresolved questions about safety procedures and the reliability of the new trains".
