London New Year Plans Coming Off The Rails - Hughes

4.26.31pm GMT Tue 9th Dec 2003

Commenting on the threat by the TSSA that they are considering refusing to work New Years Eve due to safety fears, Liberal Democrat Mayoral Candidate Simon Hughes MP said:- "The Mayor's plans for New Year celebrations in London have already come off the rails and now it looks like his plans for free New Year Tube travel may do the same."

"Safety of passengers must be the top priority of both the staff and the management of London Underground. But it is the failure of the Mayor to discuss any of his New Years plans with the people who have to implement them, which has left London New Year celebrations descending from farce into fiasco."

Notes to editor

Mr Hughes yesterday wrote to the Mayor in an attempt to find out more about his plans for celebrations for the capital.
