MPs back victims of crime

The local voluntary support network Victim Support welcomed two local MPs, Vincent Cable and Jenny Tonge, at an open day at its headquarters in Princes Street, Richmond. The initiative was designed to raise public awareness of Victim Support and its services. Hundreds of residents receive counselling support and advice after suffering crime - from burglary to rape, from domestic violence to murder.

Vincent Cable said that, "victims of crime often take a long time to recover from the stress and hurt. The police do not have the resources, or training, to provide prolonged emotional and practical support. The criminal justice system is primarily concerned with catching and convicting criminals rather than helping victims recover their confidence. This team of volunteers do absolutely invaluable work".

"One worry is that their funding is insecure. The council contributes microscopic sums and the means of allocating government money is being reconsidered. We must fight to keep this service running effectively."
