A new scheme has been launched under which reusable mobile phones collected by local charities and community groups can each earn £4 in cash for the charity.

The scheme - Community Fonebak - is promoted by Currys,

Dixons and other companies and is designed simultaneously to promote recycling (mobile phones - with 15 million customers upgrading annually - will generate 1500 tons of landfill a year) and help charities.

Local MP Vincent Cable has backed the scheme and urges residents to take it up: "if a couple of local charities adopted the scheme it would help them and help the environment at the same time".

Helpline for charities is 01727 202603
