Mortlake and Barnes Liberal Democrats have selected former Mayor and Mortlake Councillor, Eleanor Stanier, to fight the By-Election caused by the sudden death of John Saunders.

Eleanor has lived in Mortlake and Sheen since her marriage 36 years ago and knows the area well. Together with her husband Tom, a prizewinning TV producer, and three grown up sons, who all went to local schools, she has been heavily involved in local activities.

She served on Richmond Council as a Liberal Democrat councillor for Mortlake from 1997 to 2002 taking a particular interest in Housing and Education. She was Lead Member for Life Long Learning from 1999 to 2001. Locally she helped organise the millennium festivities in Mortlake. She was Mayor in 2001/02.

Currently, she is a governor of East Sheen Primary School, a trustee of Richmond Museum, and acting chair of the Thames Concert Society. She sings alto in the choir of St. Michael's church, Elm Bank Gardens, Barnes.

She is a former chair of Mortlake with East Sheen Society and started the primary schools singing festival while serving on the board of Richmond Music Trust.

Eleanor is a history graduate with a professional background in teaching, careers guidance and marketing. Her interests are her family, - she now has three grandchildren, classical music and local history.

Speaking after her selection, she said "I am thrilled that I have been selected to stand again for the Council. I believe we need a councillor who will listen to local people; work with the community; be accessible when you have a problem and get things done for our area."

Said Liberal democrat Opposition Leader, Serge Lourie "Eleanor was an excellent local representative. I worked closely with her when she was Mayor and can guarantee that she will fight for the people of Mortlake and Barnes Common and represent the whole community"
