MP Speaks up for Fireworks 'Sufferers'

Vincent Cable, MP, spoke in parliament on Friday in support of a private members' bill which will make it easier for the government (and council's) to restrict the sale and use of loud and dangerous fireworks; control their sale through unlicensed premises; and impose tougher noise standards.

Vincent Cable said that he had been approached for support by elderly people and pet owners and by a group of local blind dog owners: "Most of us regard local fireworks as an irritation, especially when they are let off around the year before and after November 5 and late out night. "

"But for pets they can be terrifying. And for the blind, whose dogs may have to be sedated and in some cases are so disorientated they have to be retired, this is a major problem".

"I don't want to see a ban. Firework displays can give a lot of people innocent pleasure. But if antisocial sale and use can be stopped there will be growing pressure for a ban".
