AIR TRANSPORT CONSULTATION

12.00.00am GMT Tue 4th Mar 2003

Dr Jenny Tonge, MP for Richmond Park, has commented on the new consultation document, The Future Development of air Transport in the United Kingdom, South East.

The MP said: "The document still fails to address the central issue of air transport. That is, it is simply not good enough to carry on with the old "predict and provide" policies the Government seems so wedded to."

"These policies failed with road transport and they will fail with air transport. If Mr Darling accepts, as he has, that congestion charging in London is proving a success, why can he not accept that the way forward for air transport is to try and control growth?

"The Government must work with its European partners to introduce a tax on aviation fuel."

" If we must have a new hub airport in the southeast – which I dispute, let it be in the Thames Estuary, as I have said before. I am adamant we can take no more expansion at Heathrow."
