"Nestle Climbdown Welcome but Overdue" - Tonge

12.00.00am GMT Thu 23rd Jan 2003

Speaking following the news that Nestlé has dropped its $6m claim against the famine stricken Ethiopian government, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State Jenny Tonge, said,

"I welcome Nestle's long overdue bout of conscience. The demand of $6 million from a country in the grip of famine was almost unbelievable, and their previous insistence that the demand was "a matter of principle" was down-right offensive."

"The 40,000 letters that deluged Nestle bosses were essential in bringing about this climbdown, and I urge their authors to continue the pressure on Nestles to ensure that it stops violating international codes when selling powdered baby milk substitutes to developing countries.

"I would like to take this opportunity to ask Nestle to make a commitment that it will not hound famine stricken countries for debt repayment in the future."
