Don't Close the Day Centres

12.00.00am GMT Tue 14th Jan 2003

Richmond Park MP Dr Jenny Tonge has responded with anger to the news that Richmond's Social Services Director Jeff Jerome says one of the Council's Day Centres will close in September.

Dr Tonge said: "So this is what the people of Richmond voted for last May!"

"Day Centres for the elderly are not just an alternative to home care. They provide preventative services which stop elderly people becoming dependent.

"Mr Jerome has been quoted as saying the Day Centres cost £108 per person per day to run. This sounds a ridiculous figure to me and I shall be writing to him to ask how he arrived at it.
