Mayor proposes Council Tax hike of 36%12.00.00am GMT Mon 16th Dec 2002 Ken Livingstone has today produced a draft budget proposing a council tax increase of 36% for the Greater London Authority. Cllr Serge Lourie, Leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition on Richmond Council has joined the chorus of disapproval. "At a time when Richmond upon Thames has had an appalling settlement and, because of some ideologically driven cost increases including the half hour free parking and over half a million pounds to be spent on a temporary scheme for Twickenham Riverside, council tax payers are already looking at a double figure increase." The Mayor's draft budget was also condemned by the London Assembly Liberal Democrats. "This increase is unacceptable," said Sally Hamwee, Lib Dem budget spokesperson. The Liberal Democrats at the London Assembly recognise the need to be for investment in public services. There has to be additional funding for better transport services and more policing, for example. However, it is crucial to ensure that any rise in the precept is fair and justified. "The budget will need to be closely examined by the London Assembly." She added: "The Liberal Democrats at the GLA will be looking for a more realistic budget providing adequate funding and delivering improvements without compromising basic services." Note to editors - The Mayor has today sent out his draft budget for consultation with the Boroughs and other interested stakeholders. Ken Livingstone presents his final budget proposals to the London Assembly on 22 January 2003. An agreement of two thirds of the Assembly is needed to VETO the Mayor's Budget.
