Pensioners Get Warm Homes Grants

12.00.00am GMT Tue 3rd Dec 2002

82 people - largely pensioners - in the Twickenham area (and a comparable number in Richmond) received help last financial year to make their homes warmer through insulation and replacement boilers.

Vincent Cable, who visited local resident Mrs Lake with representatives of the Warm Homes Week partnership last week, said: "there are hundreds of elderly people who will go through the winter cold, desperately trying to save money on heating bills."

"If they know where to go for help, they can avoid the misery associated with sitting in the cold and damp".

"I am therefore doing what I can to promote the work of the Warm Homes Week partnership (tel 0191 261 5677)."

"My only quibble is that at present the scheme applies only to people on Income Support and over 60; there are lots of other people of modest means who cannot afford energy saving measures."
