NO to 3rd Runway

12.00.00am GMT Thu 28th Nov 2002

On Saturday 23rd November Lib Dem campaigners took to the streets in torrential rain in one last defiant protest against the proposed third runway at Heathrow.

On Wednesday 27th November Jenny Tonge MP, John Randall MP (Uxbridge), and John McDonnell MP (Hayes and Harlington) will be presenting thousands of signatures collected against the Runway to Alistair Darling (Secretary of State for Transport) at the Department of Transport (2pm Great Minster House - 76 Marsham Street).

The public response to this campaign has been tremendous, Dr Tonge said, "I am delighted with the public response to this campaign."

"Over the last couple of months I have received countless letters, emails and phone calls supporting my campaign to prevent this Runway from being built."

"I would also like to thank all members of the public who have signed my petition against the Runway."

"Not only would the Runway result in 42% more flights but also 260 houses would have to be destroyed, and 230 hectares of agricultural land would be lost."

"Furthermore by 2015, 35,000 people would be exposed to levels of Nitrogen Oxide exceeding EU limits. This cannot be a sensible way forward".
