MP ATTENDS UN SERVICE

12.00.00am GMT Wed 6th Nov 2002

Jenny Tonge, MP for Richmond Park attended a multi-faith service at the Unitarian Church, Ormonde Road, Richmond, on Saturday November 2nd.

The service was organised by the United Nations Group and conducted by the Rev. Jo Lane.

Dr Tonge read the Preamble to the United Nations Charter, which refers to a determination "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war" and "to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security."

Speaking after the service, Dr Tonge said: "The Preamble to the UN Charter makes it clear that armed force should never be used unless it is absolutely unavoidable."

"With the threat of armed intervention by the US in Iraq still hanging over us, the role of the United Nations has never been more crucial."
