MP Calls for Firework Restraint12.00.00am GMT Mon 28th Oct 2002 MP Vincent Cable has supported a cross party parliamentary motion seeking stronger protection for the community from excessively noisy and dangerous fireworks in the run up to Guy Fawkes day on November 5th. The motion calls for a strengthening of the current voluntary code (backed up by some government prohibitions as on air bombs) which it regards as inadequate and calls on the government to strengthen legislation governing the sale of fireworks. Vincent Cable said: "Most families enjoy a firework display on or around November 5th in their gardens or in a public place. I don't think the authorities should be a kill joy in trying to stop bonfire night festivities." "But at present for weeks before and after November 5th elderly people, parents with young children, and pets are frightened and kept awake by indiscriminate and inconsiderate use of fireworks." "The emergency services are being put under unnecessary strain especially with a firemen's strike in the offing. I think there is a broad consensus in parliament and the public that the festivities of Bonfire Night are being abused by an inconsiderate minority and therefore there have to be tougher controls on sales and use."
