MP concerned about station toilet hygiene

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 17th Sep 2002

On Monday 16th September Jenny Tonge MP visited the ladies lavatories at Richmond Station in response to complaints from Constituents about hygiene standards.

Jenny said "Constituents have voiced their concerns to me about the low standards of hygiene in the ladies lavatories at Richmond station. On Monday I went to Richmond Station to see the situation for myself and was deeply concerned by what I found."

"Not only are the lavotories old and in need of renovation, but they are also very dirty and unpleasant. Consequently, I have sent a letter to the Chief Executive of South West Trains asking them to conduct a customer survey to find out if people would be prepared to pay a small fee to pay for a full time attendant."

"This system is used effectively at many other stations and would result in a marked improvement on current hygiene standards ."
