RFU EXPANSION ANNOUNCEMENT12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 9th Sep 2002 In response to the RFU's announcement that it is to seek planning permission for a new South Stand, Vincent Cable MP said that "there are pluses and minuses for the local community." "The minuses are the impact of a big new development looming over the roads close to the ground, and the 10% increase in match day crowds. The pluses are the community facilities which, at first sight, seem attractive." "I have to say, also, that the RFU seem to be going about the local public consultation in a more open way than when they tried to present concerts as a fait accompli. That is a positive start at least." "I know that a major concern amongst residents will be whether a big new investment will lead to more matches to pay for it. The RFU is adamant that that is not the case."
