MP Presses Council over Graffiti

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 20th Aug 2002

Vincent Cable, MP, said that there has been "some welcome progress over the last year in cleaning up graffiti and a greater willingness by the police to take action".

But he said "there are still far too many high profile buildings, which are covered with graffiti for months despite requests from residents and councillors."

"Oldfield Road is another problem area where the shops and the walls surrounding are appallingly graffited despite repeated requests for intervention".

Vincent Cable said he welcomed the news that the government has at last agreed a ban on aerosol sprays to under 18's (the previous Lib Dem council introduced a voluntary scheme two years ago) and stronger powers to ensure clean up of commercial property: "I first raised this in parliament three years ago and my colleagues have pressed for powers to be introduced. But better late than never".
