MP Applauds Allotment Holders

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 19th Aug 2002

On Saturday 16th August, MP Vincent Cable was Guest of Honour at an open day at Markhole Allotments, Hampton, and the presentation of a cup for the best allotment (to George Card).

Markhole is one of the larger allotments in the borough but currently has problems finding a sufficient number of allotment holders.

Vincent Cable said: "allotments are one of the most socially useful activities around and they receive too little encouragement and support. They keep retired people - in particular - fit, give them a social life and also contribute greatly to the local environment."

"Most allotments have a waiting list but there is spare land in Hampton. Interested people should contact the Chair, Norman Verth on 8941 3885.
